PROJECT 2
Tectonics: Design Principles, Anthropometric and Ergonomic Exploration - Isolation Structure
I went on a journey to answer all the questions by designing an isolation structure for ourselves. Working with several materials and understanding the nature and characteristics of the materials and how they are to be used in my design to express my personal experience during this pandemic period, learning about the construction details, e.g., joints, joinery and structural quality and amalgamating my design intention (learned from project 1) and structure into my Tectonic with anthropometry and ergonomics were the main targets of project 2
INSPIRATION AND MAIN IDEAS:
Principle/element: Directional/Texture
composition: edge-to-edge
banal action: lying down
TEST MODEL:
My initial idea was to create an isolation space where the person living inside would have multiple places to lay down on (13). The person would have the choice of either sitting inside the pyramid-esque structure, symbolizing lying down at home where it is safe, or the choice of going outside and sitting on the square structures which are unstable thus representing the dangers of going outside during the global pandemic. However, I completely overlooked the fact that this model is way over the volume limit (5m^3) and thus I was forced to remodel it.
FINAL MODEL (APPLICATION):
Explanation:
I created a semi-open isolation structure made 100% out of timber, where the person can lay down on the shown area. I took the pyramid-esque / stairs idea from my test model and converted it into the base. The base, as shown, is leveled in order to fit the human comfortably. I made a little bend between the second and third stair in order for the human to not feel the sharpness of the structure and to create diversity in the laying down positions. The diamond shaped design (light timber rooftop) was made in order to keep the person entertained throughout this tough pandemic period of time.

Personal Reflection:
Very difficult project. Totally unfamiliar with the concepts and the brief was very hard to understand. I learned a lot from this project though.
